The Thomas E. Murphy Engine Research Laboratory at the University of Minnesota conducts broad, application-driven research focused on enabling ammonia as a carbon-free fuel for engines and energy systems. Core efforts include advancing combustion strategies, such as pre-chamber turbulent jet ignition and thermochemical recuperation, to improve ignition stability, thermal efficiency, and emissions control in both diesel and spark-ignition platforms. The lab is also investigating the formation and mitigation of particulate matter from ammonia combustion, an emerging concern as fuel use scales. Beyond engine applications, researchers are developing ammonia-fueled burners for stationary power and thermal systems, addressing challenges in flame stability, control, and pollutant formation. With a combination of experimental engine testing, reactor development, emissions analysis, and system modeling, the lab supports a wide range of ammonia energy solutions from transportation to distributed generation.
